Comment on Why Should I Take A Multi-Vitamin? by Dr. Cronin

Hi Tina,

Yes, calcium and iron do interfere with thyroid absorption, which is frustrating for thyroid patients everywhere. I don't know of anyone custom blending multi-vitamins that way, and probably wouldn't recommend it anyway - we still need calcium, even if our thyroids are struggling!

The best advice I can give anyone taking a thyroid medication is to take it away from food (you should be doing that anyway). Then make sure you are taking your multi-vitamin with food (it's easier on your stomach, too). So, a common routine would be to get up, take your thryoid medicine, get ready for the day, shower, etc. Then when you eat breakfast, take your multi and other vitamins. Not all vitamins will alter the absorption of thyroid, so you should talk with your doctor if you have concerns about taking something other than a multi.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Hi Gayla,

Yes, it is true that some women will experience a temporary thinning of the hair following the HCG diet. That is related to the rapid weight loss, so you may experience that with any intense weight loss program. We do make sure that our patients are taking a strong multi-vitamin and that helps. We also make sure that thyroid levels are normal which can also affect your hair.

B12 shots are something commonly added into HCG "packages" at doctor's offices. B12 is designed to give your metabolism a little boost. Some people need that and others don't. We have left it out of the package in an effort to customize our approach and keep the cost to patients as low as possible. If you would like to add in B12 injections we can certainly do that, and they are $20 each.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

I have been considering this program and went to the meeting you held at the library. I have heard though that many women have had significant hair loss on HcG. Have you heard about this and what do you think is causing it? Also does the B12 shots help with this or do you take a strong multi-vitamin while on the program?

Thank you.

Dr. Cronin,

I am on thyroid medication and taking 57 MG Iodine / iodide drops total in one day. When I began taking a mutli vitamin the Iron and Calcium in my vitamins stopped my body from being able to use the Iodine and thyroid medication. My thyroid condition got much worse. Almost all of my friends have a thyroid condition so how do we get nutrients and have a working thyroid at the same time? I have spread my thyroid medication and iodine up into 3 doses with one at 6am with no food, 9 am with food, then vitamins at noon and 5pm then my iodine again just before bed at 10 pm. This works if my schedule does not get thrown off but it is painful to try to stick to this. Do you have any suggestions, like a vitamin we can tailor without iron and calcium?

Thank you
Tina
