How is that different from an MD or DO?
- The only difference in training is that we have additional classroom time and clinical training in the therapies that are specific to naturopathic medicine.
- The most important difference is the philosophy that we practice under – find the root cause, treat the whole person, respect the body’s own ability to heal, and empower the patient with education.
- We are less likely to prescribe pharmaceutical medications, and are able to spend the time necessary to really know you and your condition – not the 5 or 10 minutes you may spend at a more conventional office.
- Our training is largely identical, it is simply the philosophy and therapeutics that differ.
- NMD stands for Naturopathic Medical Doctor, MD stands for Medical Doctor, and DO stands for Doctor of Osteopathy. The MD degree indicates someone conventionally trained to use drugs and surgery as their primary treatments. The DO degree indicates someone trained to use drugs, surgery, and physical manipulation (much like chiropractic) with more emphasis on lifestyle changes. The NMD degree indicates training in drug therapy, but not surgery, and these doctors focus primarily on alternative, complementary and natural solutions for your medical conditions.
