This is the time of year when people start to examine their health and the things they can do to improve it. If one of your New Year’s Resolutions is to get healthy (lose weight, stop smoking, have more energy, better mood, etc) then read on for some tips on achieving those goals!
1 – Set Attainable Goals! If the task in front of you feels like a mountain, then lock your sights on the very first step. Getting healthy and living a healthy life is a long-term affair, and even if it takes you awhile to get there the important thing is that you’re making changes in the right direction. So, start small and reachable – take things one step at a time, and before you know you’ll have tricked yourself into climbing that mountain.
2 – Celebrate every victory, even the small ones! Sometimes, the days we are most proud of ourselves are the days we struggle the most. The day you really didn’t feel like exercising, but you did anyway. The day you had a lot of stress, but still managed to smoke less. Every little bit of progress is a good thing, especially when it’s sustainable.
3 – Speaking of sustainability, Get Back on the Wagon! Everyone falls off, everyone has bad days (even doctors!). Plan for bad days, and when they happen – shake it off. Ok, so tonight you came home and had chocolate ice cream for dinner (oops!). You’ll probably see that on the scale the next day, but rather than throw in the towel, just get right back to your regimen tomorrow. Again, this is a long-term game, and 5 good nights in 7 is still better than 1 good night in 7.
4 – Healthy eating is all about fresh, whole food, and a lot of water. As much as possible, fill your diet with fruits and vegetables of all stripes and colors. Stay away from the highly processed foods that live in the center aisles of the grocery store and come in bags and boxes, and make sure you are drinking at least ½ of your body weight in ounces of water every day.
5 – Get a good multi-vitamin for immune health, energy and prevention. Make sure you have a good quality vitamin, though. There are some pretty awful brands out there. Check the blog archives for the article on how to shop for a good multi, or if you don’t feel like reading, just stop by the office.
