School’s back in session (for many of us)! This is a great time to evaluate your child’s concentration and focus. If you notice him/her struggling to remember homework assignments or tests, getting in trouble for talking too much in class, or forgetting simple instructions, it may be time to intervene.

To see if your child might benefit from some quick and helpful tips, take our quiz!

Signs of Concentration Issues

  • Poor study habits
  • Disruptive behavior in class
  • Impatience
  • Forgets things easily
  • Can’t sit still

Helpful Tips to Boost Concentration

Ensure adequate sleep. Focus is the first thing to slip when a child is tired. Experts recommend nine hours (or more) for kids and teenagers. Try an earlier bedtime for a few days and see if things improve.

Cut out the sugar. Read the ingredients in your child’s favorite foods — if sugar is high on the list, cut back! Spikes and drops in blood sugar levels can make it very difficult to sit still and concentrate.

Pack some protein. A nutritious lunch that includes protein from lean meats, nuts (if allowed at school) or eggs  will fuel your child’s brain throughout the day.

Take an exercise break. Sadly, P.E. and outdoor play time at school have been reduced over the years, and our children are suffering for it both physically and mentally. If your child struggles to finish his or her homework, have them take a quick break to run around, dance, or do calisthenics. Getting the wiggles out makes it much easier to focus on schoolwork.

Set the mood. Calming background music or a tabletop water fountain can help increase concentration levels.
