Scrub those hands. Hand washing is the single most effective way to stop the spread of germs. Wash after using the restroom and before eating. Using soap and running water, scrub for at least 20 seconds to ensure the removal of all germs. And teaching kids to sing the alphabet song while scrubbing helps little ones learn from a young age how to wash their hands correctly (and for how long, too). If soap and water are not available, hand sanitizer can be used instead.
Get enough ZZZs. Adequate sleep is extremely important for healthy immune function. Young children (3-5yo) need 11-12 hours per night. School age children (6-12yo) need between 9 and 11 hours of sleep per night. Teenagers need about 9 hours per night. Adults should aim for 7-8 hours. Try limiting caffeine and screen time before bedtime to help fall asleep if you’re having problems nodding off.
Don’t share! Sharing food and drinks, even with someone you love, is a fast way for germs to spread. If possible, have your child take their own water bottle to school, so they can avoid using the water fountains, which are often covered in germs. If they’ve told you they share their sandwich with a friend, maybe even pack an extra for them to give away so they’re not sharing their own. Making sure they – and only they – use their own utensils can help keep them healthy, too.
Eat a balanced diet. Eating a healthy diet full of a variety of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins will boost immune system activity and prevent illness. Water is also extremely important. Kids 6-12yo should drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. Teenagers and adults should be drinking 8-10 glasses a day. Fruit juices are often full of sugar, so avoid those and soft drinks and add slices of lemon or cucumber to a pitcher of water to create a refreshing drink.
Get your vitamin D3 levels tested. Research has shown that low vitamin D status is linked to poor immune function and the inability to properly fight infections. This is a simple blood test and the treatment for low vitamin D levels is supplementation with an adequate amount determined by your doctor. Many people think that if they are regularly in the sun for long periods of time that they can’t possibly be deficient in vitamin D, but this is simply not the case. Get your levels tested to find out for sure since this is a problem that is easily remedied.
