Acne
Acne is the most common skin problem in the United States. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne affects 40 to 50 million people. Although it’s primarily a cause of frustration and concern for teenagers and young adults, it can emerge at any age. In fact, adult acne is reportedly affecting women in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond in increasing numbers.
Acne affects much more than the skin. Self-conciousness and low self-esteem are commonly reported in both teens and adults, leading to missed school or work and withdrawal from social situations. It can also lead to depression, which is a serious medical condition.
Causes of Acne
Our bodies are covered with pores, which are tiny openings in the skin. Pores release oil from the sebaceous glands to keep our skin moisturized. The largest, most active pores tend to be on the chest, back and face. Because these pores are more active, they are also more prone to becoming clogged with oil, bacteria and dead skin cells. When this happens, blackheads and white heads can form on the surface of the skin. The area around the clogged pore can become inflamed and create a cyst under the skin.
Hormonal changes can trigger higher oil production in teens and adults. In girls and women, it’s not uncommon for acne to flare up at the beginning of the menstrual cycle. Stress, food and/or environmental allergies can also cause breakouts.
