Diabetes refers to a group of conditions where a person’s blood sugar levels are too high. This can be due to either low insulin production or insulin resistance. If left untreated, the condition can cause serious problems with the heart, eyes, kidneys, nerves, and gums and teeth.
Type 1 Diabetes is commonly diagnosed in early childhood or adolescence. In Type 1, the pancreas produces little to no insulin. It is considered an autoimmune disease, and there is currently no prevention or cure. Treatment includes insulin (via injection or a pump) and monitoring of diet and blood sugar levels.
Type 2 Diabetes is the most common form of the disease. Type 2 runs in the family. The body develops an insulin resistance and eventually cannot make enough insulin to maintain a healthy blood sugar level. Type 2 is typically treated with diet and exercise, oral medications and insulin. Many of our patients are able to reduce or eliminate the need for insulin and oral medication. This requires specific dietary recommendations and careful monitoring during the process.
Gestational Diabetes is a condition that some pregnant women develop, and it can affect the health of both the mother and baby. Screening of blood sugar is essential during pregnancy in the 3rd trimester. Treatment typically includes a specialized meal plan and physical activity to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. It may also require daily blood testing and insulin. Having a history of gestational diabetes does put a woman at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
