There are so many types of headaches, they have affected nearly everyone at one time or another. Head pain usually falls into one of three categories: primary, secondary, and cranial nerve/other.
The primary category includes the common tension headache, migraines and cluster headaches.
Head injuries and illness are often the cause of secondary headaches. Dehydration, alcohol consumption and medications are also culprits.
Cranial nerve pain is caused by inflammation of one of the cranial nerves that control the muscles and carry signals to and from the neck.
Causes of Headaches
A wide range of triggers can cause primary head pain, including:
- Physical stress
- Emotional stress
- Hormonal imbalance
- Food allergies
- Environmental allergies
- Ease the tension. Physical stress can cause head pain, so consider massage, yoga, tai chi or other gentle exercise to release stress.
- Watch what you eat. Pay attention to head pain that occurs following a meal, as it might be a food allergy that’s the culprit. Try not to skip meals — this habit can bring on an aching head, too.
- Drink plenty of water. Dehydration is a very common reason for an aching head. Most of us don’t realize we aren’t getting enough H2O. Aim for 8-10 cups per day.
